The Working Group for the Promotion of Young Researchers supports activities that are especially aimed at early career researchers. We organise an annual student meeting (A) and activities to promote researchers at PostDoc level (B).
A. Student Meeting
Since 2000, the working group is organising the annual Swiss inter-university PhD and doctoral Student Meeting of SSTMP. The meeting allows all PhD and doctoral students in Switzerland who work in the fields of parasitology or tropical medicine to present their projects to other students, discuss their work, and expand their Swiss network in the field. Moreover, topics such as career development are discussed with selected invited speakers. These meetings contribute to the formation of a close national network, which is important for development of the students’ careers.

B. PostDoc Initiative
The SSTMP Postdoc Initiative addresses early career researchers at the postdoctoral level in the field of parasitology and tropical medicine with three aims:
- To promote scientific exchange and collaborations
- To provide an environment to discuss and address topics and specific challenges at the postdoctoral level
- To encourage career planning.
In 2024, we launched the SSTMP Postdoc Initiative with a one-day event in Bern, and it was a grand success. Sixteen postdocs from different institutes across Switzerland working in the field of parasitology participated in the one-day event held on the 28 August 2024. Five exceptional keynote speakers with diverse career backgrounds brought us into their worlds. We firmly believe we accomplished our goal of providing a safe space to discuss and address the unique challenges we all face at the postdoctoral level and got inspiration to plan and foster our careers. Moreover, we discussed scientific topics and engaged in potential future collaborative projects. We achieved our goal of expanding our network with new connections in academia, industry and start-ups, and between peers. We aim to continue this initiative. Stay tuned!
